A. D. Hope
Inscription for a War

Stranger, go tell the Spartans we died here obedient to their commands.
— Inscription at Thermopylae

Linger not, stranger. Shed no tear.
Go back to those who sent us here.

We are the young they drafted out
To wars their folly brought about.

Go tell those old men, safe in bed,
We took their orders and are dead.

    Inscription for Peace

There is no fault in hope
    without it no dissent
Folly and shame in war so many lives rent

We are all ages from all ages
    rejecting war though not sages
One common motive we beg repent

Shed not grief stranger linger acquaint it well
Go to the young ones and tell
    those who may not know
War has motive the old men won’t show
We will tell them before we go
