Qld to host NATO camouflage trial19:56 AEDT Thu Apr 12 2012

Australia is hosting an international trial to test the effectiveness of military camouflage uniforms in tropical conditions.

Defence Science and Personnel Minister Warren Snowdon said that was being conducted at the Army Jungle Warfare Training Centre at Tully, north Queensland, with 10 Australian soldiers testing trial camouflage suits in a variety of environmental conditions.

Mr Snowdon said Tully was selected for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) camouflage field trial because of its unique geography and natural tropical conditions.

He said the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) was participating and would share the information from the trial process.

“This is a significant activity to be hosted in Australia with participation from Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland,” he said in a statement.

“The trial will also contribute to the ADF’s ongoing program to enhance the protection of Australian soldiers. It will improve our understanding of detection by modern sensors that can ‘see’ in the ultraviolet, visual, infrared and radar bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.”

Mr Snowdon said the trials involved in-service and experimental clothing items, with NATO researchers using advanced imaging techniques to measure its effectiveness in the visual, ultraviolet, infrared and thermal spectrum under tropical conditions.

“Importantly, the trial will provide valuable data to better inform the ADF Diggerworks program in current and future camouflage design concepts and assessment methods,” he said.

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry: NATO should contribute to ensuring peace and stability in region
S. Agayeva

Baku: Azerbaijan, as a NATO partner country, has been contributing to global peace and stability for many years, is an active participant of the Alliance’s operations in Afghanistan, and the Alliance, in turn, may play an important role in ensuring regional security, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s Security Department Deputy Chief Gaya Mammadov said at a conference in Baku dedicated to the upcoming NATO summit Chicago.

He said Azerbaijan and NATO cooperate in several directions: political dialogue, which is held at the highest level, the country’s participation in NATO peacekeeping operations, assistance in mine clearing in Azerbaijani territories previously occupied by Armenia and assistance in applying NATO standards in the Azerbaijani army.

“As is known Azerbaijan is in conflict with Armenia, and in this context, some problems emerge in applying NATO standards in the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. Therefore, Azerbaijan needs the Alliance’s assistance,” Mammadov said.

He said Azerbaijan hopes for NATO’s intensified role in establishing peace and stability in the region.

NATO and Azerbaijan are actively cooperating in the field of democratic, institutional and military reforms, as well as conducting practical cooperation in many areas. The programme of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO is set out in the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan seeks to achieve Euro-Atlantic norms and standards and come closer to Euro-Atlantic institutions. In this regard, support for security sector reform and creation of institutions of democracy are the key elements of cooperation between NATO and Azerbaijan.

In addition to reforms, another important area of cooperation is support to Azerbaijan in the conduct of NATO-led operations. Currently, Azerbaijan sent peacekeepers to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. In the past, the country has also actively supported operations in Kosovo.

Nato ready to play war games
By Kaye Nicolson

Hundreds of military personnel are descending on the north and north-east for the largest Nato maritime, air and ground training exercise in Europe.

Joint Warrior is conducted in the spring and autumn of each year and provides training for all three UK armed services and forces from allied nations.

The exercise is held in the UK because of its complex geography and oceanography. Crews have to react to scenarios in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.
